If God Is for Us: The Unshakeable Security of God’s People in Christ
Romans 8:31–34 NLT
31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honour at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Message
I. The Wonderful Things God Has Done (Romans 8:1–30)
We studied the wonderful things written in Romans 8:1-30 over the past five weeks. Last week, we studied:
The Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words (Romans 8:26 NLT), with perfect intercession (Romans 8:27 NLT) and perfect providence (Romans 8:28 NLT).
God knew His people in advance, chose them to become like His Son, called them to come to Him, gave them right standing with Himself, and gave them His glory (Romans 8:29-30 NLT).
II. If God Is for Us (31)
Today, Paul declares in verse 31a:
31a What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?
‘such wonderful things’ indicates Romans 8:1-30 NLT. Especially, it indicates the climax written in Romans 8:29-30 NLT.
Paul adds in verse 31b:
31b If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
The wonderful things written in Romans 8:1-30 truly indicate “God is for us.” Then, we can ask, “Who can ever be against us?”
David sang in Psalm 56:9b NLT, “This I know: God is on my side!” Again, David said in Psalm 56:11 NLT, “I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?”
III. The Father’s Gift Guarantees Every Other Gift (32)
See verse 32:
32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?
Jesus uses a similar kind of reasoning in Matthew 7:11 NLT:
“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”
And the parallel in Luke 11:13 NLT is even more specific:
“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
Jesus said, if God feeds the birds, He will feed us far more valuable to Him than the birds are (Matthew 6:26 NLT). Likewise, God will certainly care for us if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers (Matthew 6:30 NLT).
IV. No Accusation Against God’s Chosen (33)
See verse 33:
33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself.
God has chosen us for His own, and God Himself has given us right standing with Himself. So, no one can dare accuse us.
V. No Condemnation Because Christ Intercedes (34)
See verse 34:
34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honour at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
- Christ Jesus died for us to pay for our sins.
- Then He was raised to life for us to live to God.
- Now He is sitting in the place of honour at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
Therefore, no one will condemn us.
